🖼️ Discovering pigments and oil techniques from the 15th-17th century
Dates : 7-11 September 2026

Duration : 5 days / 30 hours of lessons (6h/day)

This course offers an immersion in the techniques of ancient painting through the discovery of natural pigments, the preparation of supports and the learning of the traditional processes used by European painters from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
Participants will realize a personal work while discovering the historical know-how related to the manufacture of colours and the construction of a painting in successive layers.
Day 1 – Discovery of materials, preparation of support and installation of your table
Introduction to the history of ancient painting, Presentation of natural pigments: mineral, plant and animal origins, preparation of traditional media (roofing and gesso preparation). Setting up the drawing and first layer (maigre) of paint on your painting.
Day 2 – Fabrication of colors, preparation of mediums and resumption of work of your table
Study of the different natural pigments (those necessary to make your table), Grinding and preparation of pigments, principles of colour conservation and stability, manufacture of traditional mediums, initiation to painting chemistry. Second layer of paint on your painting.
Day 3 – Continuation of media manufacturing and continuation of your table work
Application of 2 additional layers of gesso. Chassis voltage if necessary. Third layer of paint on your painting: looking for just tones; more material input.
Day 4 – End of media manufacturing and continuation of your table work
Application of 2 additional layers of gesso. Sanding every layer. Fourth layer of paint on your table: material differentiation work: flesh, wood, fabrics ...
Day 5 – Completion and presentation of achievements
Final touches, colour harmonization, work on details and effects of matter, finishing of the work, collective presentation of the works and exchanges around the techniques discussed.
At the end of the course, the participants will be able to identify and use different natural pigments, prepare a painting medium according to traditional methods, manufacture colors and mediums, implement a painting in successive layers and realize a personal work inspired by ancient techniques and understand the fundamental principles of painting of the ancient masters.

Very interesting stage that has made us discover the techniques of the ancient painters whom we admired already before but which we will admire even more after having become acquainted with these ways of doing which we ignore as simple « leisure painter »Stéphane knows how to communicate his enthusiasm and we have all been delighted with this internship where we are delighted even without knowing how to use the brush too much!(I speak for myself....)

The program is very well thought out: even if oil imposes drying times, they are usefully used to grind colors, prepare frames, marouflage canvases... We're not bored!

I lived this internship with pleasure, passion and interest. A beautiful one-week experience that allows you to discover and learn the techniques of ancient painting and the manufacture of materials: colors with the base of pigments, mediums and support canvas or wood. This learning is indispensable to me in the journey of every painter. It happened to panic in the progression of the subject painting that I had chosen and Stéphane with his calm and excellent advices allowed to progress in the right direction and practice this medium with patience. I discovered with happiness the glacis and also how to feed his painting with matter and also this fabulous recipe of linook oil. The program is very satisfying between alternating demonstrations, manufacturing and painting of his painting. Our group of ten people was nice and it was nice to talk to each other and paint together. I think the cost of this internship is reasonable for everything he brings us. I miss this week already and I want to make another one soon. Thank you very much Stéphane for everything you brought us and taught us.
Eliott Silhol –
This internship far exceeded my expectations, which were yet high! I loved the alternation between "technical" learning sequences such as the grinding of pigments, the cooking of flax oil to prepare the medium to paint, the tension of the canvases on the chassis, with "sensitive" sequences of paint. Every day we had this alternation, also to let the fine layers of paint dry. I found this very pleasant and complete because in just 5 days we were able to paint a painting in the ancient method in successive fine layers.
Stéphane has a great knowledge of these Flemish methods, inherited from his father painter and his close researches, he generously shares them with a real teaching faculty. He also accompanied us during the painting phases, on glaze techniques, melts on skin carnation, etc. That's exactly what I was looking for!
We also learned how to make casein-based glue, marouflage on wood panel, and I discovered several tools and techniques that I will use later!
The dynamic of the group was very benevolent and pleasant, also concentrated because everyone was really there to learn. It was perfect, the only problem is that it went too fast! We're asking for more!
