The Van Eyck workshop

A demanding and caring place of transmission

The workshop is inspired by the operation of the Guilds In the past, where learning was a long, rigorous and structured journey.

At that time, you entered very young as apprentice, and you spent several years grinding pigments, tending canvases, preparing supports, observing the actions of the master without painting yourself.

Gradually, there was access to the manufacture of mediums, to the transfer of drawings, to the greyness, to the first coloured layers. It was only after long years of observation and practice that we became companion, then, for some, Master.

This slowness, now gone, was not a brake, but a deep formation, a discipline of eyes and hands.

It's this spirit I'm looking for at the Van Eyck workshop: Back to the technical foundation, not to copy the past, but to draw inspiration from it.

Each course or internship follows the logic of these stages: you learn to understand the materials, feel the gestures, build your painting layer after layer.

Rigor and benevolence, demand and slowness chosen This is what the workshop proposes to those who wish to paint differently.

What we do:

A slow and structured pedagogy

Here, each student is accompanied at his own pace, in a rigorous and caring setting.

We work in small groups (6 to 10 people), in quiet, with regular demonstrations. Long time is our ally.
